Time to Rethink Time Management ⏰

Impagination September 2025 Newsletter

Are you excited or dreading September?

It’s back to routines, which is a perfect time to consider our relationship with time.

Let’s face it, 30 minutes at the dentist (sorry dentists 😌) doesn’t feel the same as 30 minutes doing something you love. One drags endlessly, the other flies by.

So why do we treat all time the same at work?

It’s time to shift the conversation from managing your time to managing your energy.

Productivity isn't just about hours on a calendar. It's about how energized you feel while doing the work.

🔥 For me, I gain energy from brainstorming solutions (solo or with others)

For someone else, energy might come from:

🔥 Building durable, practical physical solutions

🔥 Diving deep into research and analysis

🔥 Creating ultra-efficient processes and detailed plans

It all depends on how you naturally get things done.

And it's not the same for everyone. 😅

I still block time in my calendar, but I plan around the energy a task requires. For example, I tackle high-energy, strategic work in the morning.

Admin tasks? I save those for later in the day when my energy naturally dips.

And interruptions? A simple email or unexpected tech glitch can derail deep work for me. While someone else might thrive on troubleshooting and quick pivots.

That’s why knowing your natural working style is key.

The Kolbe MO is one of my go-to tools for understanding how I (and others) work best. It’s helped me recognize where I have the most energy, like big-picture brainstorming, and where I need to bring in support.

Here’s one of my favorite pieces of advice I share with clients:
“Everything starts by setting a date (or goal).”

Why?

Because:

🎯 A clear target galvanizes energy, for you and your team.

🎯 Working backwards from a date or goal helps align tasks with your natural energy flow.

🎯 You can leverage others’ strengths (and Kolbe MOs) to ensure you get across the finish line.

I’ve learned to stop trying to “manage time” and instead focus on managing energy.

It’s a powerful perspective change, not just for productivity, but for avoiding burnout and enjoying more satisfaction in your work.

So, here’s the question:

What would your workday look like if you planned it around your energy, not the clock?
